What is the SAVE Act? And how will it impact voting in the future?

Posted on March 9, 2026 by Suji Kanneganti

On February 25, 2026, FOX56 published an article titled “What is the SAVE Act? And how will it impact voting in the future? by Benjamin Freeman.

““For Pennsylvanians, we already have a voter ID law,” explained Kenner. “It’s been on the books for quite some time. It works. Only Pennsylvanians are getting registered to vote in Pennsylvania, and only Pennsylvanians who are eligible to vote are actually casting a ballot in Pennsylvania.”

Currently in the Commonwealth, to be able to register to vote, you need something like a driver’s license, and they use that and your Social Security number to check to see if you’re a citizen. But under the SAVE Act, you can’t. You’d need physical proof that you’re a citizen, like a passport or a birth certificate but only about 50% of Americans own a passport, and if you’ve changed your name, say, due to marriage, your birth certificate needs to match your current name. Voting rights groups say that this could potentially bar tens of millions of Americans from voting in future elections.”
